How to Pick a Sustainable Recruitment Partner

Craig Kilminster our consultant managing the role

In today's fast-paced business environment, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) are more than just buzzwords—they are crucial elements that contribute to the long-term success of any organisation. For business leaders looking to select a recruitment partner that aligns with these values, understanding how to pick a sustainable recruitment partner is essential. With CSR and a commitment to diversity and inclusion at our core, Marks Sattin stands out as a leading example of a sustainable recruitment partner.

Why Sustainability Matters in Recruitment

Sustainability in recruitment goes beyond environmental concerns; it encompasses ethical business practices, social responsibility, and economic growth. A sustainable recruitment partner not only helps you find the right talent but also ensures that their operations and values align with your organisation's commitment to sustainable practices.

Marks Sattin's Commitment to Sustainability and CSR

We kicked off our sustainability initiatives with a bang in 2024. As part of our annual Market Insight & Salary Trend Report, we planted a tree for every response we received to our survey. This resulted in our largest ever sample, and over 2,200 trees were planted as a result! The mangrove trees we have planted in Madagascar will help local communities through flood prevention.

But that is not all, we have embedded sustainability into the fabric of its operations. Here is how we are leading the way:

Carbon Action Plan

Marks Sattin is dedicated to monitoring and reducing its environmental impact. The company has implemented a comprehensive Carbon Action Plan, which is updated annually and published on their website. Additionally, they submit data to Ecovadis and receive audits from BSI for their ISO14001 environmental accreditation. Highlights of their plan include:

  • Achieving Net Zero by 2050: Marks Sattin is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, highlighting our long-term dedication to environmental sustainability.
  • Annual Updates:  The Carbon Action Plan is regularly updated, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Environmental Management Initiatives

  • ISO 14001:2015 Accreditation: Maintaining this prestigious accreditation highlights their commitment to environmental management.
  • New Headquarters: The new office features the latest VRF technology for heating and cooling, sensor-controlled lights, and only one A/C unit compared to nine in the previous office. It also promotes lower carbon commuting options. We also have a partnership with Smol to help us reduce plastic usage in some of our office locations.
  • Guidance to Staff: Providing guidance to staff on reducing electricity use and encouraging alternatives to business travel, such as Skype and Teams.
  • Paperless Processes: Introducing more paperless processes to minimise waste.
  • Fleet Management: Offering low emission vehicles and introducing the first electric vehicle into our fleet in 2022, resulting in 45,897 electric business miles in 2023—a 21% reduction in petrol/diesel usage.
  • Sustainable Electricity Supplier: Choosing an electricity supplier that provides sustainable energy.
  • Flexible Working: Implementing flexible working arrangements across the network.
  • EV and Cycle to Work Schemes: Encouraging staff to adopt greener commuting options.

Future Initiatives

Marks Sattin is continuously looking to the future and aims to implement further measures to enhance our sustainability efforts. Future initiatives include:

  • Carbon Offsetting Schemes: Exploring options for carbon offsetting.
  • Reduction in Internal Combustion Vehicles: Further reducing the reliance on internal combustion fleet vehicles.

Conclusion

Choosing a sustainable recruitment partner is vital for organisations committed to CSR and environmental stewardship. Marks Sattin exemplifies what it means to be a sustainable partner, with a strong focus on reducing carbon emissions, promoting eco-friendly practices, and continually striving for improvement.

By partnering with a recruitment firm like Marks Sattin, HR managers and finance leaders can ensure they are aligning with a company that not only understands the importance of sustainability but actively works towards it.
