9 reasons to take a Temporary Employment Contract
Does a temporary contract seem uncertain or even scary to you?
While it's undeniable that a certain level of unpredictability accompanies temporary work, it's crucial to recognize the multitude of advantages it brings, often acting as a gateway to broader career prospects.
In my role, focusing on both temporary and permanent finance opportunities in the Netherlands, I’ve put together nine compelling reasons why a temporary contract could be the ideal fit for you.
But first things first, what is a temporary contract?
A temporary contract, often referred to as a fixed-term contract, is a type of employment agreement with a predetermined duration.
Unlike permanent contracts, which have an indefinite term, temporary contracts are established for a specific period, whether it be weeks, months, or years.
These contracts are commonly utilised by employers to address short-term business needs, such as seasonal fluctuations, special projects, or workforce gaps.
1. Expand your knowledge, insights and skills
Embracing a temporary contract presents a valuable chance to broaden your skill set and expertise across diverse methodologies, software, and platforms.
Given the unique operations of each organisation, learning varied systems and processes becomes an inherent part of the temporary work experience.
The exposure to different organizational approaches not only enriches your current skillset but also enhances your adaptability, rendering you more marketable in future employment opportunities.
Temporary contracts serve as a catalyst for continuous professional development, making each assignment a stepping stone towards a more versatile and employable skill portfolio.
2. A higher rate of pay
While this may not be the case in every situation, because companies are looking to quickly hire, they will offer competitive salaries to secure the right talent.
Also, since they know the position is temporary, they understand the importance of ensuring that it’s worthwhile for the candidate.
3. Expand your network
If you have done well in your temporary assignment, that usually goes hand in hand with making connections and getting great references.
The more people you know, the more likely you are to connect with someone who can help you secure your next opportunity.
Even if there isn’t an opportunity to secure a permanent contract in the future with the company, taking a temporary contract will help you to expand your contacts.
4. Secure permanent employment
Frequently, a temporary contract paves the way for a more lasting commitment. Your temporary stint becomes a stage to showcase your capabilities, allowing you to leave a positive impression that might translate into a permanent position.
Beyond merely executing tasks, temporary work affords you the chance to identify organizational needs that align with your skillset.
Harnessing this opportunity, you can strategically present your achievements and highlight the value you bring to the organization.
Crafting a proposal that underscores your contributions positions you not only as a capable temporary employee but also as a potential long-term asset, making a compelling case for a permanent role.
5. Flexibility
For many, the big advantage of working on a contract basis is flexibility. A contractor usually has more control over their work when compared to a professional in a permanent job.
Contract roles allow for breaks to study part-time perhaps, or to go on a long trip between contracts if you enjoy travelling!
6. Transition specialisms
Do you want to transition to another field of work? Then working an interim contract can be an excellent way to find out whether that field of work suits you, or to gain some experience in that new field of work.
Moreover, working a temporary contract offers you the opportunity to look in on different organisations, perhaps even competing ones.
This can lead to an increase in your labour market value. In any case, it allows you to experience what type of organisational culture you like best.
7. Prevent gaps in your CV
If you are in between permanent contracts and assessing your options, taking a contract role is a good way to prevent long gaps in your CV and a great way to keep your ear to the ground on your market and discipline.
8. A faster hiring process
Typically, when employers are looking for temporary professionals, it’s because they have an urgent role to fill.
This often means they do not have time to go through a large amount of CVs, and are therefore willing to be flexible with their requirements and reach out to schedule an interview immediately.
Furthermore, most companies will work with a recruitment consultancy that will help process paperwork and manage payroll.
9. Diverse experiences
Within a defined timeframe, you get the chance to dive into and often lead a specific department or project, seeing it through from start to finish.
This not only brings a refreshing energy to your work but also ensures a sense of fulfilment, all without the worry of falling into a monotonous routine.
