Charting a path to more fulfilling careers and a stronger society
Did you know only an estimated 10% of accountants volunteer their time and expertise to non-profits? Charterpath is on a mission to make this 50%.
Charterpath is a non-profit organization aiming to inspire more accountants to volunteer their time and skills, connect them with non-profit opportunities, and engage with other organizations, so volunteering becomes a core part of an accountant's career.

All non-profits need volunteers with financial skills to:
- Oversee their financial performance
- Monitor processes and controls
- Contribute to strategic planning
- Evaluate fundraising opportunities
- and the list goes on…
However, as accountants tend to be busy people, these skills are often the hardest to find.
Charterpath are on a mission to:
Inspire
Connect
Engage
Inspire more accountants to volunteer their time and skills to non-profits
Charterpath uses social media to spread the word about the benefits of volunteering and how to get involved – could then have a link to the LinkedIn page? Non-profits are in desperate need of volunteers with financial skills and also increasingly looking for candidates from diverse backgrounds to bring different perspectives to their Boards. Don’t doubt the difference you can make.

Connect accountants with non-profit opportunities and a support network of other volunteers
80% of accountant volunteers were referred by their network or sought out the role themselves, this doesn’t make for a diversity of volunteers! The Charterpath website has a whole host of resources to help volunteers chart a path into the non-profit sector, including how to find volunteering opportunities and training materials or courses available.
Engage with accounting institutions and employers so volunteering is a core part of an accountants’ career
55% of accountants did not volunteer due to their existing work commitments. Many corporates now offer charity days where employees can take time off work to volunteer without using up precious holiday. However, the take-up of these days is less than 20% on average – a huge missed opportunity to create value for the non-profit sector. Does your employer offer corporate charity days? `Would your colleagues be interested in hearing from Charterpath about how to make the most of them? Get in touch with Charterpath to find out more.

Charterpath’s mission is to get talented finance professionals to dedicate two days a year to volunteering. In September 2022, when we launched our partnership with Charterpath, we set the target of getting our community to dedicate 365 days to volunteering their finance and accountancy skills to a non-profit.
As of today, 58 people have signed up to dedicate their skills and time to a charity. This means we are 32% of the way there! If you would like to get involved, sign the Charterpath Pledge to stay updated on their latest opportunities and events.
Volunteering opportunities currently available
Charterpath works with non-profits to connect them with talented finance professionals. Volunteering doesn’t have to be an enormous time commitment – whether you have two hours a week to spare, or two hours a month, there will be a charity out there that would love your support.
Treasurer / book-keeper roles at smaller charities tends to be more hands on than Trustee / Committee member roles at larger charities or schools. The most important thing is that you are clear on the role description, so expectations are aligned! Charterpath founders
Alice Clementi and Alex Marsh are long-standing friends and former colleagues, having qualified together at PwC as chartered accountants. They were inspired to co-found Charterpath having volunteered from early stages in their careers and realising… with a little encouragement… many more accountants could benefit from the experience.
Alex Marsh
Alex runs Klarna UK by day (and night) and in any spare time in between has been chair of governors for a state funded secondary school in Brighton. Education is his passion and he is a trustee and volunteer for a number of education related charities.
